A foyer sets the tone for the whole house, and fall is the perfect time to give it a welcoming touch. This year, I didn’t purchase anything new. Instead, I gathered pieces I already had, and arranged them in a way that feels fresh and seasonal. Even though the only orange you’ll see is in the tiny pip berries wrapped around the candles, the whole space still speaks of autumn. With symmetry, soft candlelight, and a mix of rustic and refined details, this simple fall foyer decor feels cozy and ready for the season. Come take a look around and see how it all came together.

Start With Symmetry

When you walk into a foyer, symmetry immediately makes the space feel orderly and calm. My antique dresser is centered between two little wicker armchairs, and everything else is arranged around that setup. This type of balanced design is easy to achieve and instantly makes a room feel pulled together. Even if your furniture pieces aren’t identical, placing similar items across from each other creates the same effect.

Layer With Lanterns and Candles

Large lanterns are some of the most versatile accessories in my home. I actually have two sets that move around from place to place. One set is smaller, and the other is quite large, but both are made of wood with a rustic feel. For this autumn foyer, I switched out the smaller pair for the larger ones, and the difference was immediate. They make such a statement, especially when filled with pillar candleholders and simple ivory candles. This brings in both height and texture, while the soft glow of candlelight feels especially fitting on cool fall evenings. Lanterns can be used in almost any room, but they are particularly lovely in an entryway where they provide a welcoming touch right as you walk through the door. If you don’t have lanterns, try grouping hurricane vases or tall glass jars with candles inside. They’ll give you the same warm glow and layered look. (FYI: my lanterns are 20 inches tall and 9 inches wide.)

Bring In Books and Flowers

A small stack of books is always a good way to add interest and personality to a tabletop. For this fall display, I placed books in the center of the dresser, between the lanterns, and then added a vase of fresh hydrangeas on top. The books add a rustic layer, while the flowers bring life and color. If fresh blooms aren’t available, faux stems or even dried branches work just as well. A simple bunch of greenery from your yard can also give the same effect without any cost.

Add Seasonal Pillows

The wicker armchairs in our foyer are simple, but adding navy block print pillows gave them a seasonal update without buying anything new. Pillows are one of the easiest ways to refresh a room because they can change with the seasons or holidays. They don’t have to be traditional autumn colors either. While I love warm fall tones, the navy adds a darker, moodier feel that still works beautifully this time of year. If storing seasonal pillows isn’t practical, consider using slipcovers that can be switched out, or simply pull a pair of pillows from another room to give your space a fresh look. For even more inspiration, see my collection of farmhouse throw pillows that work all year round, or take a look at how I style neutral pillows in different ways.

Mix Rustic and Refined

What makes this foyer work for fall is the mix of textures and styles. The rustic wicker chairs and casual block print pillows balance beautifully with more refined pieces like the books and pitcher of fresh flowers. Even though I didn’t rely on the traditional palette of oranges and golds, the darker tones of the navy pillows and the warm wood accents still bring in a seasonal feel. It’s proof that fall decorating doesn’t have to follow strict rules. By mixing textures, colors, and items you already own, you can create a look that feels fresh, timeless, and uniquely yours.

Final Thoughts

Decorating a foyer for fall doesn’t need to involve shopping trips or complicated projects. Sometimes the best approach is to simply use what you already have, arrange it in a new way, and add one or two seasonal touches. Whether that’s a set of lanterns, a favorite pillow, or just a few branches from outside, it’s enough to welcome the season in a meaningful way. There are no rules, so let your own style and family story guide you. That’s what makes a house feel like home. Ann – Remind me how you hang your plates & platters? Provide a link if possible! Thanks!

    1. Hi Wanda…thank you for asking this question. I usually hang my plates with wire plate hangers. I have added a few options to my shop. Here is the link: https://amzn.to/3HPKoy2 I have also used the round disc hangers, but I prefer the wire hangers because they are removable, and the plate is still usable. Let me know if you need anything else!

    Ann,

Thank you for your thoughtful and practical ideas as we begin decorating for Fall. I am going to try to use what I already have in new ways. Your bread recipe sounds yummy. Blessings!!!

  8. I love your beautifully styled house, but wonder where your husband lives in all this spacious beauty? My husband’s outdoor stuff is everywhere, and it is NOT decorating stuff! We live in a small place and there isn’t anywhere else for it to go (believe me, I’ve tried!). I just wonder how others deal with this.
